The firm Emmanuelle Moureaux Architecture + Design was inspired by the idea of leaves and foliage when it was creating the Tokiwadai branch of the Sugamo Shinkin bank in the ever-changing metropolis of Tokyo.

The building’s predominantly white (and slightly perforated) façade is whimsical and artful, featuring silhouettes of trees and 14 windows that are each decorated with vibrant colors that captivate passersby.

Standing three stories high, the ground level is designed with an open layout that contains the ATM machines, teller windows, and three interior courtyards. The second floor is home to the loan offices, reception rooms, and four additional courtyards. The topmost level is sectioned off for facilities management and staff-only areas.

The seven courtyards in the bank not only stream natural light into the overall building but they also help connect the different spaces and regulate spatial flow from one area to the next.

The leaf motif is repeated in 24 different colors and appears on the walls and windows throughout each floor in the bank. Modular armchairs in similarly bright-color upholstery fabrics are matched with simple low wood tables, which are placed in a waiting area on the ground floor.

At night, the bank lights up from the inside and instead of a financial institution the building looks more like a large-scale art installation.
